“Lord of the Rings” Trilogy Returning to Theaters

It’s hard to believe that its been 23 years since Sir Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” hit theaters. Since then, it and its follow-ups “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King” have become cultural touchstones. They’ve also seen expansions and remasters in the intervening decades that have turned the films into epics that are yearly viewing experiences for some families and households all over the world.

If you act quickly enough though, you may get the chance to see these movies in 4K at a nearby theater this summer.

“The Lord of the Rings” – New Line Cinema

Warner Bros. Pictures has partnered with Fathom Events to bring each of the films to participating theaters this summer. It’s one film per day, with “The Fellowship of the Ring” hitting June 8th, “The Two Towers” on June 9th, and “The Return of the King” on June 10th.

And yes, these are the extended editions, meaning the run times are 228 minutes, 235 minutes, and 251 minutes respectively. So basically, if you don’t want to miss anything, go to the bathroom before the movie starts.

Tickets are currently on sale, so you may want to act as quickly as possible to ensure you’re part of the experience. If you’ve never seen the extended versions before either, this would be one hell of a way to see them for the first time. Ever wonder what happened to Saruman and why he didn’t show up in the third film? Well, now you can find out on the big screen. Head over to the Fathom Events site to hopefully score a seat.

“What about ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy?” we hear you ask. Doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen anytime soon. So if you want that marathon session to happen, you’ll have to do it on your own time.
