Nia DaCosta May Direct “28 Years Later” Sequel

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta has had quite the career. 2021’s “Candyman” and last year’s “The Marvels” are just two of the projects she’s directed. “Candyman” proved that DaCosta has some experience in the horror genre, something that will come in handy in a potential project.

    Nia DaCosta announces “Candyman”

DaCosta is in talks to direct the second film in the new “28 Years Later” trilogy from Sony Pictures. This will follow Danny Boyle‘s (“Trainspotting,” “Pistol“) 2002 film, “28 Days Later.” Little is known about the project, other than original writer Alex Garland (“Dredd,” “Civil War“) penning the script. This was part of a deal that was announced earlier this year, with “28 Years Later” launching a new trilogy of films in that universe.

At this time there are no set dates for this trilogy project. Boyle will reportedly direct “28 Years Later,” which may start production later this year. Filming for the sequel would be expected to begin immediately after. This explains why Sony wants to lock down a director as quickly as they can. It would also make things easier to have both directors on the same page, while maintaining their individual creativity. Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew would be producing. Oscar-winner and “28 Days Later” star Cillian Murphy may star in the continuation film, but will be executive producer.

Until the talks officially end in a deal, DaCosta’s next project is MGM Orion Pictures and Plan B’s “Hedda.” The project is based off of the Henrik Ibsen play “Hedda Gabler.” DaCosta wrote, directed, and produced the “visceral” reimagining, which will star Tessa Thompson (“Thor: Love and Thunder“).

We will follow this story and report once we learn more.
