February 29th marks a very special birthday in the world of comics. Specifically, it’s the birthday of DC Comics’ Kal El, aka Superman. To mark the day, filmmaker James Gunn treated fans to a special first look at his upcoming film which started principal photography TODAY, and updated us on the title.

Superman: Legacy DC Comics, DC Studios

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn said across his social media. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy.  By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN.  Making our way to you July 2025.”

The film will star David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicolas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olson,  Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Isabella Merced as Hawkgirl, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern.

So, there you have it. Instead of “Superman: Legacy,” it’ll now just be titled “Superman.” As always, we’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news. Happy birthday, big guy!

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
