David Katzenberg to Direct “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” Spinoff

Paramount Pictures has made a huge stride forward in reviving its classic 1986 film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” The studio just scored David Katzenberg (“The Goldbergs”) to direct the follow-up movie, “Sam and Victor’s Day Off.” It will be a continuation of the John Hughes film, following the two valets who take a Ferrari belonging to Cameron Frye’s (Alan Ruck) father on a joy ride

Producers for “Sam and Victor’s Day Off” include Paul Young of Argyle Media, “Cobra Kai” co-creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. Dina Hillier is attached to executive produce, with associate producers Stephen Cedars, Benji Kleiman, and Scott Yacyshyn.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” was written and directed by Hughes and soon became a cultural touchstone. It raked in $70 million at the box office and spawned a short-lived 1990s NBC sitcom starring a young Jennifer Aniston.

The original film follows the titular character, played by Matthew Broderick, as he ditches school to hang out with buddy Cameron and girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara). We follow the trio as they have a fun-filled day of adventure in Chicago while avoiding being caught playing hooky. In the film Richard Edson and Larry Flash Jenkins play unnamed valets who take Cameron’s father’s Ferrari on a joy ride.

“Sam and Victor’s Day Off,” started development in 2022 and Katzenberg’s hiring has been the first major update we’ve seen in a while. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the project as they become available.
