Ryan Gosling on Oscar Snubs: “There Is No Ken Without Barbie”

Oscar season is upon us, with nominations being released this week. And as always, with the nominations comes the inevitable snubs. No film, or its cast and crew are immune to being snubbed. Including the biggest movie of the Summer, “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig. Ryan Gosling, who received the nomination for Best Supporting Actor, released a statement reflecting how many feel about the situation.

“Barbie” took the world by storm. The film received 8 nominations, but there is some controversy. “Barbie” star Margot Robbie, who played the titular character, was not nominated for Best Actress. Gerwig was also not nominated for Best Director. And we have to say, we are disappointed.

Following the nominations, Gosling made a statement addressing how he felt about the snubs:

“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history, Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Gosling expressed happiness for fellow co-star America Ferrera, who received a nom for Best Supporting Actress. “Barbie” also received nominations for Production Design, Costume Design, two for Original Song, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture.

We have to agree with Gosling’s statement, in which he perfectly addressed the situation. He pulled no punches while still speaking about his disappointment in a classy way. The 96th Academy Awards will take place March 10th, 2024 and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
