Ever wondered about the history of some of your favorite video game consoles? Well, you’re in luck! Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz (“Is It Cake?”) are directing and producing a new docuseries about the history of the groundbreaking video game company Atari!

The working title for this new limited series is “Game Changers: The Story of Atari.” It will chronicle the innovative company from its inception in 1972 to its potential future. While consoles like the Atari 2600 may be a distant memory for many. The company currently owns or manages more than 200 games and franchises, including “Asteroids,” “Centipede,” “Pong,” and “RollerCoaster Tycoon.” So it’s safe to say they are still kind of a big deal.

“The story of Atari would seem almost unbelievable if the people who lived it weren’t still here to tell the tale,” Cutforth said in a statement. “These maverick innovators survived everything from corporate malfeasance to Mafia death threats to create the household name games and groundbreaking technology that launched and shaped the video game industry.”

Lipshitz then explains that their Atari series “is not just the epic 50 year saga of a legendary brand,” but is “a fascinating and hilarious oral history of the video game industry and the Silicon Valley tech revolution.”

Paying homage to Atari’s “rich, fifty-year history that fans continue to celebrate and explore,” added Atari CEO Wade Rosen. The company is “looking forward to working with Alfred Street Industries to share our story with existing fans and bring new fans into our growing community.”

In April of 2021, Rosen became CEO, he and his team intend to reignite the legacy brand while keeping its unique place in video game history in mind. It certainly sounds like this project fits in perfectly with that initiative.

There is currently no set release date for “Game Changers: The Story of Atari.” We’ll keep you posted on updates as they become available.
