Netflix has just released the trailer for its newest sci-fi drama, “The Kitchen.” The film is the feature-length directorial debut for both Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”) and Kibwe Tavares (“Robot & Scarecrow”). It takes place in a dystopian London dripping with cyberpunk flare, where the working class battle against a brutal ruling upper class. Social housing has been completely eliminated forcing the working class into “The Kitchen.”

While the bulk of the two-minute trailer focuses on the new universe scripted by Kaluuya and Joe Murtagh (“The Woman in the Wall”), we do get some sense of the main characters. The story revolves around Izi (Kane Robinson) who is hellbent on escaping The Kitchen.  “I’m getting out of this place,” he tells one man in the trailer, who simply responds, “It’s our home.”

Izi eventually finds a surrogate son in Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman) which only strengthens his resolve to battle against the violent police state that they live in. All while he watches his repressed fellow residents cling to the only home they have ever known.

“The Kitchen” also stars Hope Ikpoku Jr (“Unearthed Narratives”), Ian Wright (“Sinister Circus”), and Demmy Ladipo (“Dreaming Whilst Black”). Alongside musicians BackRoad Gee and Cristale, and newcomer Teija Kabs. Kaluuya and Daniel Emmerson will produce the film with Michael Fassbender executive producing.

“The Kitchen” hits Netflix January 19th, 2024. You can check out the first trailer below:
