Bringing “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” to Life [Interview]

Our favorite king of the kaiju roars back into our lives with the new Apple TV+ series, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” We had the opportunity to speak to showrunner and co-executive producer Chris Black, executive producer Matt Fraction, director / executive producer Matt Shakman, and VFX supervisor Sean Konrad about bringing the legend to life.

Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell both play versions of Lee Shaw. Through his and his Monarch compatriots’ eyes we see the institution’s discovery of Godzilla and fellow titans. See your expectations when it comes to one of the world’s most famous behemoth. Directionally the show focuses more on the real monsters: people (and… bureaucracy?).

If it’s been a bit of time since you last checked in with Godzilla, the series does its best to try to catch you up on the events of the Monsterverse (which includes: Gareth Edwards’ 2014 “Godzilla,”  and continues with 2017’s “Kong: Skull Island,” 2019’s “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong”).

More about “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”:

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Also starring: Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski.

The first two episodes of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” are streaming now on Apple TV+, and will be followed by one episode every Friday through January 12, 2024.
