“Snow White” Delay Caused by Fears of a “Cats” Situation?

Disney‘s choice to delay their upcoming live-action “Snow White” could be due to fears the film will be a “financial disaster.” A current swirling rumor has producers believing the film will bomb, and “cripple” any chance for future spin-off projects.

Rachel Zegler, “Snow White” Walt Disney Pictures

Last month, the company announced the film will be delayed until 2025, a full year after it was scheduled to release. The decision to delay is credited to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Yet numerous industry rumors indicate Disney feels this movie is a “$330 million turkey.” Apparently, they’re afraid of having a 2019’s “Cats” situation on their hands.

This project has already had its fair share of online criticism. Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage had some concerns about the continued use of dwarves from the original story. Things were further fueled by star Rachel Zegler‘s (“West Side Story“) comments on the updated plot.

“She’s not going to be saved by the prince and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love,” Zegler said during D23. “She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true.” She’s also said the original animated film was “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power and what a woman is fit for,” and described it as a “love story with a guy who literally stalks her.”

We have to seriously wonder how bad this film really is, if the producers are looking at “Cats” for what not to do. Even if these “flop fears” are purely rumor, we don’t think any movie can be as bad as that.

    James Corden, “Cats” Universal Pictures

“Snow White” is being directed by Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man” films). The script was written by Greta Gerwig (“Barbie“) and Erin Cressida (“Secretary“). It also stars Gal Gadot (“Wonder Woman“) as the Evil Queen.

“Snow White” is currently expected to be released sometime in March 2025. We’ll let you know when we hear more about this and other news. You can catch Zegler and Dinklage in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” which hits theaters November 17th, 2023.
