Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American rights to the upcoming teen horror film “Abigail.” The new movie is directed by Melissa Vitello (“Community Theater Christmas”), from a script by Gunnar Garrett (“22”).

Set in 1976, “Abigail” centers around troubled teen Abigail Cole (Ava Cantrell). She and her mother move to a small town in Alabama to escape her violent past. She quickly befriends the boy next door, Lucas (Tren Reed-Brown), who is mercilessly bullied by kids at school.

Things begin to spiral out of control when she takes matters into her own hands to seek revenge against his tormentors. When Lucas begins to uncover the dark and twisted nature of his new friend, things take a deadly turn. Now, he must decide between standing by her or stopping her before it’s too late.

The film’s cast also includes Karimah Westbrook, Hermoine Lynch, and Gene Farber.

“Abigail is a wild descent into the teen psyche,” said Dark Star president Michael Repsch in a statement. “The film brings important topics like bullying, racism, mental health and gender stereotypes to the forefront while staying true to the core horror genre, giving audiences a thoughtful experience painted in bloody throwback fun.”

“Working on Abigail was a fun opportunity for me to explore everything I love about twisted teen genre and coming-of-age rage,”  director and producer Vitello said in a statement. “Dark Star Pictures has been absolutely more than I could have hoped for when it came to finding a home for this film,”

“Abigail” is set to receive a theatrical release in select theaters in December 2023, followed by transactional home entertainment sales.
