“Ted Lasso” Star Thinks Spin-Off Series Has Potential

There are a lot of good shows out there. But when you get a show that hits all those wholesome notes and makes you believe in hope again, you want to hold onto it. “Ted Lasso” recently came to a close with its third and final season, much to the bittersweet chagrin of its fans. But there have been rumors of one or more spin-offs, which are starting to get more steam.

Given that the series ended with Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) expressing an interest in forming a women’s league Richmond team, the little tease was enough to get fans clamoring for more.

Waddingham and co-star Juno Temple were so thrilled by the idea of a spin-off that their reactions in the show are near genuine. “”When Juno and I read that, we didn’t know how we wanted to convey our excitement about the potential of that,” Waddingham said. “[In the script] I was meant to look up from the folder and just be like, ‘Oh, it’s on.’ But we couldn’t contain our excitement. So if you look at it, we do have a moment of ‘Aghhhh!’ The hard part is the fact that unless I play her, Rebecca doesn’t exist anymore. And I want to see her through. If you are left at a moment with the character, you want to see them through that moment. Does it work with her and the Dutchman? Does she have a female league? I mean, I hope so! It feels like it’s finished but not finished, because none of our lives are.”

So there’s definitely the potential to extend the Lasso universe, as it were. And while there aren’t any plans in place, it’s certainly food for thought. No doubt fans would love to see more. But writer/star Brett Goldstein doesn’t want folks getting their hopes up, either. Apple TV+ shared a photo that may have fueled possible spin-off talk.

“For the record, none of us were involved in that,” Goldstein said. “I think it was just, here’s a picture from the show, and I think a lot of people may have misinterpreted it. What would that potential [spinoff] be? Well, yeah, it’d be Roy making chocolate biscuits for Rebecca, and Beard and Roy working out who could communicate least. And Nate doing all the good stuff. And a lot of bloody laughs along the way.”

So while it’s living more in the realms of the unlikely, there’s potential there. All three seasons of the critically acclaimed series are available to stream on Apple TV+.
