In 2019, adult swim announced plans to adapt Junji Ito’s supernatural horror manga “Uzumaki” into a mini-series. But there hasn’t been much movement on it, aside from last year when the company said the series would be delayed. Now, they have unveiled the series first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC)!

The “Uzumaki” manga series was first published in 1998 and consists of three volumes. It centers around Kirie Goshima, a high school student living in the cursed town of Kurôzu-cho. And that’s just not teen angst talking, the small town on the coast of Japan, is REALLY cursed. Its residences have an extreme, supernatural, fascination with spirals of any kind. A fascination that soon turns into unrelenting terror.

This series was written and illustrated by the legendary manga creator, Junji Ito. While there is already a live-action adaptation from 2000, this new series will be animated to try to capture Ito’s uniquely ominous style.

“Uzumaki”’s mini-series will be directed by Hiroshi Nagahama (“Aku no hana”) and will feature music by Colin Stetson (“Hereditary”).

“As a huge fan of Junji Ito, I’m thrilled to be able to tackle one of his signature works, with a team of amazing creators who are all equally devoted to doing justice to this monumental work of horror manga,” said Jason DeMarco, adult swim/Toonami’s creative director.

Most recently the series was planned to run for four episodes and debut in October of 2022, airing as a part of adult swim’s Toonami block of programming. While there is still no release date set, yet.  A trailer is certainly a step in the right direction. Given the footage, we think it’ll be worth the wait. But you can see for yourself in the trailer below. We’ll keep you posted on “Uzumaki” updates as they become available.
