James Cameron “Warned” Us in 1984 About AI Dangers

With the ongoing discourse around the uses, both good and bad, of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it’s no surprise certain authorities on the subject are voicing their opinions. Like Oscar-winning Canadian filmmaker James Cameron, who had a thing or two to say on the matter.

“The Terminator” director and co-writer agrees with many experts that the advancements of AI are a threat to humanity. His main concern is with the producers of AI, and if they are doing this for money, or for defense. “I warned you guys in 1984, and you didn’t listen,” Cameron said.

AI and it’s usage is one of the main arguing points of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. Many feel artificial intelligence should be under strict regulations. However, advancements keep happening before those regulations can be made.

“I think the weaponization of AI is the biggest danger,” Cameron said. “I think that we will get into the equivalence of a nuclear arms race with A.I., and if we don’t build it, then the other guys are for sure going to build it, and so then it’ll escalate.”

James Cameron doesn’t believe that the technology is at the point where it can replace writers anytime soon. He certainly isn’t interested in using A.I. to write any of his scripts. “It’s never an issue of who wrote it, It’s a question of is it a good story,” he said. After being pressed on if he’d ever be open to accepting an AI-produced script “Let’s wait 20 years, and if an A.I. wins an Oscar for Best Screenplay, I think we’ve got to take them seriously,” Cameron responded
