“Mario Movie” Exec Denies Plans for Zelda Movie

The internet has been abuzz with rumors that Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo already plan to make a Zelda movie. In the wake of the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie“, it would seem like a logical path. But according to Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, rumor is all it is. Meledandri claims there are no such plans in place, and that he doesn’t know why people are assuming.

“I don’t know where that came from,” Meledandri said. “I mean I can understand how people would surmise all sorts of things because obviously, we’ve had a great experience working together. My relationship with Nintendo now includes being on their board of directors, so I understand how people can surmise these things. But in terms of the specifics, that was just something that I’ve been hearing lots of reports. This is just about what’s next between Nintendo and Illumination.”

While it’s not a complete denial of a project happening sometime in the future, that doesn’t mean the possibility isn’t there. And given what a success Nintendo has experienced with the Mario film, it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility for a film of “The Legend of Zelda” to show up sometime. Especially with the success of “Tears of the Kingdom.”

But in the meantime, Meledandri is refuting the rumors that have swept through the internet like wildfire. We’re not going to lie, we’re a bit relieved. The Zelda games feature Link as a silent protagonist. Casting a voice for him might be upsetting for many. The last time that happened was the cartoon in the late 80s, in which Link sounded like an orange county bro.
