Report: Sony Working on “Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles”

Apparently movie bombs aren’t enough to deter Sony Pictures from continuing on a doomed course. Despite “Welcome to Raccoon City” being an incredible flop, Sony has apparently provided funding to the city of Sudbury, Canada, for another film, under project name “The Umbrella Chronicles.” It feels a little bit like a bit of a fool’s errand for Sony to continue pushing the struggling “Resident Evil” film/television franchise.

For those unfamiliar with the “Resident Evil” games, “The Umbrella Chronicles” was a rail-shooter version of the events of “Resident Evil 0“,“Resident Evil “, and “Resident Evil 3” with some additional content specific to the game. Popular enough to be followed up by a sequel, “Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles“, which featured events from “Resident Evil 2” and “Resident Evil: Code Veronica“. But given what the games featured, that’s a lot of content to condense into one movie. So there’s a lot to question about what the content of a film with the same title might entail.

Why Can’t They Just Use The Game’s Plot?

“Welcome to Raccoon City” did horribly at the box office, and it attempted to take all the content from the first and second games and cram them into one. Something caused a lot of problems and would, frankly, work better as a television series. But even that has problems. Film-makers just can’t seem to follow the story that’s already there. The previous “Resident Evil” films didn’t try to stay faithful to the plot of the games. And the Netflix series also failed to bring anything interesting to the table.

“The Last of Us” series is practically a plot-for-plot, shot-for-shot retelling of the game. And look how well that’s done. If they could just do the same for “Resident Evil,” it would be phenomenal. This just feels like Sony leaning hard in to making failures simply for the cash grab. That doesn’t tend to impress fans much.

We’ll let you know what we hear about “The Umbrella Chronicles,” and other news.
