“Wheel of Time:” Is Shohreh Aghdashloo Playing Elaida?

It’s been a minute since we talked positively about Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of “The Wheel of Time.” While season one wasn’t exactly what we were hoping for, we will agree the casting for certain roles has been spot on. This is why the current rumored addition of Shohreh Aghdashloo is pretty exciting.

You’ll no doubt recognize Aghdashloo from her genre work in series like “The Expanse,” “Star Trek Beyond,” and “Mass Effect.” Or perhaps her Oscar nominated turn in “House of Sand and Fog.” She’s also chatted with “Wheel of Time” showrunner Rafe Judkins on Twitter a time or two.

Judkins, who is currently developing another little show for Amazon (“God of War“), responded to Aghdashloo back in 2021, saying she’d been “on his mood board” for a certain character for a long time. WHAT character though, that’s the question.

There are two likely answers. The first being Cadsuane, an Aes Sedai of the Green Aja, who just so happens to be the oldest living sister (so far). Sure, we can see that, but it’s the other major possibility that has us more interested. Elaida do Avriny a’Roihan, Aes Sedai of the Red Aja. We don’t want to get into the REAL BIG spoilers for non-book readers, but she’s kind of a big deal, and we could ABSOLUTELY see (and hear!) Shohreh in this role.

Chances are we won’t hear for sure for sometime. Filming for season 3 is currently underway in various locations across Europe, where Aghdashloo was spotted on set. “Wheel of Time” season 2 hits Prime Video September 1st, 2023.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
