Cinderella will be joining The Grinch, Winnie The Pooh, Peter Pan, and Bambi in the current trend of remaking public-domain children’s stories into horror movies. This movement is mostly being helmed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, director of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” its upcoming sequel, “Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare,” and the producer of “Bambi: The Reckoning.”

The upcoming “Cinderella’s Curse” is a combo breaker that will be directed and produced by Louisa Warren for ChampDog Films. The script is written by Harry Boxley who wrote the upcoming “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” another horror reimagining. While plot details at this time are unknown, it will at least loosely be based on a French children’s tale penned by Charles Perrault. A tale that spawned a beloved Disney animated film and a slew of other live-action and animated adaptations. Though none are quite like this…
“This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know,” Warren told Bloody Disgusting. “There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands. I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling.” Given how Cinderella is treated by her family in the story, I think we can all venture a guess as to how this blood-soaked flick will play out. The original story already had some horror elements to it, or at least in the versions where women are cutting off their toes to try to fit the glass slipper.
Filming for “Cinderella’s Curse” is slated to begin next month in the UK. Kelly Rian Sanson, Chrissie Wunna, and Danielle Scott are currently set to star. The new movie will also be going up for sale at the American Film Market. With ITN Studios aiming for an October 2023 release date.
We’ll keep you posted on updates as they become available. As well as the myriad of other horror adaptations of children’s classics as more of these tales enter into the public-domain.
