Restaurant Sets World Record for Most Expensive Ice Cream

I scream, you scream. We all scream for ice cream! But we might scream in horror at the price tag on this ice cream. Japanese brand Cellato just secured a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for making the most expensive ice cream treat on the planet. Made with some of the rarest ingredients, this ice cream named Byakuya — meaning “white night” — will cost you a staggering ¥873,400. That’s $6,670 (USD)!

While your head is spinning over the price tag, let’s take a look at what goes into this wallet-killing confection. A combination of sake lees (a paste-like leftover from making Sake) and Parmigiano Reggiano, is mixed together with an extremely rare white truffle only found in Alba, Italy. The truffle itself runs ¥2,000,000, roughly $15,192 (USD). That’s one hell of an expensive mushroom! But there is more to it than just getting their name in the book of World Records.

Presented with a silver spoon! — Cellato

Cellato also wanted to fuse Japanese and European cuisine into something truly unique. To do this, they brought in Tadayoshi Yamada, the head chef of Osakan restaurant RiVi known for its imaginative fusions. The end result, according to those who sampled the pricy dessert, is a rich, robust taste and creamy texture. The palette’s blanketed with the taste of white truffle, while the nose fills with the fruity scents of the cheese. Sensually following is the taste of the sake lees. Truly an unforgettable taste experience.

This is only the beginning for Cellato. Getting a World Record title is certainly an accomplishment. But the ice cream-maker is already brainstorming on more products to sell using the finest and priciest ingredients. Champagne and caviar is on the docket next. And likely coming with another eye-popping price tag. We’re sure it’s an amazing taste experience. But for our part, we’re just as happy with ice cream costing $6 and not $6,000. If you’re looking for a cheaper price tag, Cellato also sells a Starry Night black truffle ice cream for roughly $72.00.

New record: Most expensive ice cream – JP¥873,400 (£5,469; €6,211; $6,696) made by OMER in Japan.
