Producers Hint a Fifth “John Wick” Film Could Happen

With “John Wick: Chapter 4” currently dominating box offices, rumors of a 5th chapter are starting to swirl. While the 4th film is clearly meant to be the end of the title character (Keanu Reeves)’s journey, producers are dropping some serious hints that a 5th may be a possibility.

“There’s a will and there’s an openness,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake said about the end of “Chapter 4.” “And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways. We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee.” Lionsgate has been backing the franchise ever since 2017’s “John Wick: Chapter 2.”

But he isn’t the only one planting the seeds for a “John Wick: Chapter 5.” Producer Basil Iwanyk says a new film will depend on Reeves and series director Chad Stahelski coming up with a logical storyline.

“Once they get through their hangovers, if Keanu and Chad have figured out something cool, if they’ve an organic way back in that doesn’t feel like bullshit, then there will be a John Wick 5,” Iwanyk explained. “That trip to Japan, it’s like waiting for a boat to emerge out of the smoke, but that’s the impetus. These movies are really hard for Keanu and Chad, and everybody. By the time each one is over, most involved have said, never again, this is too hard and we’re not getting any younger. Then time goes by, you see it embraced by fans, and after working together every year for 11 years, it’s become a family and in some demented way, and we miss each other. But I totally defer to Chad and Keanu to figure out what and if that story is.”

Obviously, everyone is hedging their bets and being non-committal about a 5th “John Wick” film. So for now this is a big ol’ rumor. As Iwanyk pointed out, Reeves may need to call it quits due to how physically demanding the role is. Plus he’ll be pretty busy with his band, Dogstar, making a comeback. There is also a chance Reeves and  Stahelski can’t find a logical way to keep Wick in the universe. It doesn’t seem like anyone is willing to risk the integrity of the franchise with a weak entry.

We’ll keep you posted on possible updates about “John Wick: Chapter 5” as they develop. You can check out a trailer for “Chapter 4,” which is currently in theaters below:
