16th Season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Hits in June

In 2005, FX premiered “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Regardless of how much positive attention the show garnered in its outset, no one would’ve predicted it would become the longest running live-action, scripted comedy in television history. Yet, here we are on the brink of the show’s 16th season and it’s still going strong. The last season wrapped its eight episode run back in December of 2021 meaning its been a year and a half since the last seen exploits of “The Gang.” But just as The Dayman fights the Nightman, fans can rejoice now, as the wait for new episodes will soon be over.

Playing off the concept of “sweet sixteen,” this upcoming season is being called the sweetest season yet. Knowing the show’s history though, there should be a very heavy set of quotation marks around “sweet,” followed by air mark quotations when you read the word out loud. The future batch of episodes promises to take on headline issues ranging from inflation to U.S. foreign relations to gender equality. The last season premiered with the topical episode “2020: A Year in Review” which revealed how The Gang factored into major political events of the year.

Currently “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is contracted for two additional seasons after this one, so there’s at least an 18th season in the show’s future. The cast members have taken on other projects over the last few years as well, Glenn Howerton starred in “A.P. Bio” for four seasons while Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day created the series “Mythic Quest” while also writing for it in addition to McElhenney starring in it. Meanwhile Charlie Day has found what will probably be continual work in voicing Luigi in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Kaitlin Olson has been appearing on the HBO comedy, “Hacks” and Danny DeVito continues to be a national treasure.

The 16th season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” premieres on FXX on Wednesday June 7th with back-to-back episodes. They’ll be available to stream on Hulu the next day. Wacky shenanigans are sure to ensue.
