Rainn Wilson Shares “The Office” Pandemic Episode Ideas

Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight on “The Office,” has some pretty good ideas for Covid-based episodes of the hit NBC series. The actor was recently on “The Drew Barrymore Show” and deeply wished they had been a possibility. He muses on how his character would have reacted to the pandemic and what he would have done when Dunder Mifflin put forth a “return to office” mandate.

“The Office writers were so great — they would’ve been able to spin that in some beautiful ways,” Wilson said. He elaborates on his own ideas, claiming that Dwight would be tasked with getting his co-workers to return. And that the end result would be “kidnapping” his colleagues and returning them to the office in “some kind of obscure and somewhat inappropriate way.”

Apparently, this is a bee in Wilson’s bonnet since 2020, when he elaborated on pandemic Dwight on “The Late Late Show.” “You’ve got Dwight fighting the pandemic. You’ve got Dwight building his own vaccine, his own antibodies. Maybe doing secret tests on people in the office… Anything you can possibly imagine, he would be all in on the conspiracy theory.”

It’s a fun concept, but Dwight’s extremely gullible and has an almost fanatical respect for institutional systems. It’s more likely Dwight would be so paranoid — having bought into both CDC and conspiracy information — that he would be incapable of leaving his house. That or boast about being immune while forcing everyone else to wear masks and keep a set distance from his cube. Probably with a taped outline on the floor and a long pole to make sure no one crosses. Company get-togethers would more than likely result in a hazmat suit-clad Dwight. All while lording his superior immune system and impenetrable defenses over his coworkers. Naturally, he would end up being the only one in the office to get it.
