Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has clarified some rumors about his upcoming film. To promote his book “Cinema Speculation,” Tarantino did a Q&A with Thierry Fremaux at the Grand Rex theater in Paris. He confirmed the film will indeed be called “The Movie Critic.” But he denied the film would be about Pauline Kael, a film critic for The New Yorker from 1968 to 1991.

The only things he really clarified about the plot was that the film would be set in 1977. Also, that the main character will not be a film critic, shooting down all the rumors about the protagonist being based on Kael.
As far as the development process goes, Tarantino recently completed the screenplay. It also seems that the process of writing “Cinema Speculation” inspired him to write “The Movie Critic.” He’s aiming to shoot in Los Angeles in the fall. Frémaux even invited Tarantino to bring “The Movie Critic” to Cannes 2025.
To clarify, the Grand Rex theater has a strict no cell phone policy. So all accounts of this Q&A are coming from people who were there, and it’s doubtful any recordings will surface.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about “The Movie Critic” as they develop.
