Black Panther Named Best Film By The A.A.F.C.A.

The African-American Film Critics Association, the most prominent organization of black film critics kicked off the upcoming awards season by revealing their list of the year’s best in the industry.

The Hollywood Reporter well, reported on December 11th that Marvel’s Black Panther took home the highest honor of Best Film.  As we all know, the film was an incredible success so bringing home only one award was not going to happen.  Director Ryan Coogler also topped the auteur category, while Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s collaboration “All The Stars” on the Black Panther soundtrack took home the Best Song.

“Selecting Disney’s Black Panther as the year’s best film was a no-brainer,” said AAFCA co-founder Shawn Edwards. “Beyond its tremendous reviews and historic box office performance, the film changed the culture and became a defining moment for Black America. … Many have waited a lifetime for a moment like this and Black Panther delivered with a multi-generational appeal never before seen.”

Truer words have never been spoken.

Coogler’s genius style of filmmaking complimented by the best use of Afro-futurism we’ve seen in a while was the perfect recipe for Hollywood success.  Not only with the numbers, you’d have to search pretty long and far to find someone who didn’t love the hell out of that movie.  I recently watched Black Panther on Netflix, it’s even better the second time around.

Of course there were other winners… check out the full list as well as the A.A.F.C.A.’s Top Ten films by clicking this link.

Has the A.A.F.C.A. set the tone for next year’s Oscars? Maybe this will be the year that Marvel finally brings home a little gold statue? Between Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, they have as good a shot as ever.
