Elon Musk Loses Most Amount of Money Ever (in Recorded History)

The second wealthiest man in the world, Elon Musk, has also lost the most amount of money ever. Well, at least in recorded history. There might have been some guy in the past that had a bunch of fancy cows and they died in a epidemic making him the one with the most cows lost. But we’ll never know that. For now lets focus on recorded history and how Musk is now the record holder for the most amount lost.

It’s not only the most amount lost, but also the most amount lost in such a short period of time. In November of 2021, Musk was worth $340 billion. He’s currently valued at $146.5 billion. That’s a net loss of $203 billion in just a year and change.

If you’re curious who else makes the list for “biggest losers” in history here’s a short list of who’s been talked about when it comes to fortunes lost.

    Sam Bankman-Fried

A 30-year-old at the time and the founder of FTX lost $16 Billion when the company collapsed. FTX was a company that operated a cryptocurrency exchange and crypto hedge fund. Many people were defrauded when FTX could not meet the demand of all of their customers withdrawing their funds at the same time.

    Masayoshi Son

Son was the founder of Softbank. Before the dot com crash the company was valued at $200 billion and Son was richer than Bill Gates for a total of three days. After his announcement that he would invest $15 billion into Vodafone Japan in order to compete with the government’s NTT Docomo Network the stock sank. Then the dot com bubble crashed and Softbank lost around $70 billion in todays’ money. Softbank did make it as a company, but it took many years to get back on their feet.

    John Rockefeller

An oil magnate and America’s richest man in 1929 lost around $10 billion in todays money. The Wall Street Crash was the beginning of the Great Depression which lasted 10 years.
