James Cameron Teases Possible “Terminator” Relaunch

Director James Cameron may try to relaunch the “Terminator” film franchise once again. This may come as a shock to some considering 2019’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” underperformed. To say the least. Despite all the hype, “Dark Fate” reportedly caused a loss of roughly $122.6 million.

Linda Hamilton “Terminator: Dark Fate,” Paramount Pictures

It’s a shame, considering it saw the return of several core cast members from “Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” Linda Hamilton came back to play Sarah Connor, as did Edward Furlong as John Connor. Even the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, returned for the 2019 revival. Which is something the director now thinks contributed to the film’s failure.

While speaking about artificial intelligence in movies, Cameron teased a possible relaunch. “Well, the Avatar films are about the environment; I’m not dealing with AI. If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try and to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy.”

    Tri-Star Pictures

Most fans still blame the sudden death of John Connor early in the film. You know, the character they spent all of the 1st two films trying to save. Considering it was supposed to be a direct sequel to “Judgment Day” made this decision even more puzzling. This left many to think “Dark Fate” was the film to kill the goose who laid the golden egg.

“I think what happened is I think the movie could have survived having Linda in it, I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Linda and Arnold in it and then, you know, she’s 60 something, he’s 70 something, all of a sudden it wasn’t your Terminator movie, it wasn’t even your dad’s Terminator movie, it was your granddad’s Terminator movie,” Cameron said. “And we didn’t see that. We loved it, we thought it was cool, you know, that we were making this sort of direct sequel to a movie that came out in 1991.”

And this is not to mention all the rights issues surrounding the franchise.

We’ll keep you posted on any “Terminator” news as it become available.
