Gwen Stacy’s Backstory Will Be Covered in “Across the Spider-Verse”

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” gave us a delectable taste of not only animation firsts, but only tidbits on the various Spider-persons. We got some background on the nazi-punching Spider-Noir, the anime Peni Parker, and the bizarre origins of Spider-Ham. But there’s one character we didn’t get enough on: Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld). “Across the Spider-Verse” will apparently cover more of Gwen Stacy’s backstory.

In Gwen’s world, she deals with moral struggles on the daily. Firstly, Spider-Gwen is blamed for the death of the Peter Parker of her universe. Secondly, the police officer charged with the vigilante’s capture is Gwen’s own father. Likely to be a struggle that we get to experience more fully as Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) makes his way across the alternate universes.

She’s significantly opened up to Miles since they met, and there’s definite infatuation on Miles’ part. A glimpse of her universe will fill in some of the gaps about her for him. Perhaps becoming a point of contention or conflict surrounding the plot. A brand new trailer for the film drops tomorrow. Which may give is a little more info on just what the plot might be.

The villain of the film is The Spot (Jason Schwartzman). A lesser-known villain with the power to create and use portals at will. Given that the spider-verses seem connected by portals themselves, it could mean any manner of nefariousness involving The Spot’s abilities. We can hardly wait to see just where the story of “Across the Spider-Verse: Part One” will go when it hits theaters in June 2023.
