Everyone knows the excitement of the Academy Awards, aka the Oscars. The lead up as a pair of celebrities read corny jokes off a teleprompter before announcing the nominees, the tension as they open the envelope containing the winner’s name, and the explosive celebration that arrives a moment later when the name is read out. But as we saw in 2022, it didn’t happen for every major category. Best Actor and Best Actress, sure, definitely Best Screenplay and Director as well.
Last year, eight different Oscars categories — original score, makeup and hairstyling, documentary short, film editing, production design, animated short, live action short and sound — were cut from the main telecast. This rightfully lead to outrage across the film industry, as these ‘behind the scenes’ jobs do so much to help audiences immerse themselves in film. They deserve their time in the sun.
Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, had confirmed those categories will be represented in the 2023 telecast. “We are committed to having a show that celebrates the artisans, the arts and sciences and the collaborative nature of movie-making,” Kramer said. “This is very much what the mission of the Academy is, and I am very hopeful that we can do a show that celebrates all components of movie-making in an entertaining and engaging way.”
When asked about what audiences can expect from the telecast, Kramer said, “All I will say right now is that our anniversary, the 95th Oscars, is extremely important to us. I think it sets a really interesting rhythm for our 100th. You see this in the museum, I think we are able to celebrate our legacy while bringing the Academy into the future and the show will reflect that.” At the very least, we know that Jimmy Kimmel will be returning as host.
The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12th, 2023, live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The ceremony will be televised live on ABC, and in more than 200 territories worldwide. We’ll let you know when the nominations are announced.
