Francis Lawrence Really Wants “Constantine 2” to be Rated R

We still can’t get over the fact we’re FINALLY getting a sequel to the “Constantine” film. Not only that, but director Francis Lawrence is already confirmed to be returning. Lawrence recently announced the project was officially happening. And if he can get his way, the snarky exorcist sequel will get the R-rating it deserves.

Lawrence isn’t the only one that wants this movie be made to its full potential. Keanu Reeves will of course be reprising his role. Akiva Goldsman will return to provide the screenplay. Both have been anxiously waiting to return to the DC Comics world of angels and demons.

“We followed, per Warner Bros., the rules to make a PG-13 movie in terms of violence, blood, language, sexuality,” Lawrence said. “But the ratings board gave us a hard R based on their the gray zone of intensity. And my big, big regret was that we have an R-rated movie that’s really a PG-13 movie.”

Pressure from what Warner Bros. Pictures wanted swayed the end result for the movie. Given the work put in to adhere to the guidelines, the end result is a film that’s tame in its content, but high in action. It feels a little flat because it was forced to be restrained. If anything, the occult detective is far more of a dark humored, sarcastic type. Think Harry Dresden, but less wizard.

The project itself won’t be for some time, but let’s hope that Lawrence can make it without interference and give it a fully-deserved R-rating. His newest film, “Slumberland” starring Jason Momoa, hits Netflix on November 18th, 2022.
