Neil Gaiman on Status of “The Sandman” Season 2: Wait And See

“The Sandman” season 1 has been out for a little over a month now. It’s been well-received by critics, and fans are enjoying rewatches or spacing out the episodes to extend the experience. So fans are wondering, why hasn’t Netflix announced a season 2? Author of the source material Neil Gaiman fielded the question personally, as the answer is a little complicated.

    Neil Gaiman, Masterclass

“Sandman Season 1 dropped Aug 5th. The data harvesting has only just finished – and is complicated by a lot of people not binge-watching it, but spreading it out, letting episodes sink in before watching the next. Telling Netflix to hurry up won’t make decisions happen faster.”

Even Dream is stuck waiting for now — The Sandman/Netflix

A series like “The Sandman” costs a pretty penny to make. Given Netflix’s current struggles, they’re having to measure the risk to reward for renewals of series’ at present. It’s taking some time to put together the worthiness of making a second season. Streaming services like Netflix don’t earn money through ads or sponsors in the same way traditional television does. Their income stems largely from subscriber numbers, so they can’t count on ad revenue for gain (though there seems to be some rumblings about ad-based viewing being implemented).

Due to all this, it’s a waiting game to see if “The Sandman” will be renewed. Whether or not we’ll see Dream continue his exploration of human nature and Lucifer’s plans furthered is matter of time and watching. Many of us will be anxious to hear the answer in the coming days.

Until then, “The Sandman” season 1 is available for viewing or rewatch on Netflix now.
