PlayStation Under Fire for Overcharging for Games and DLCs

A new lawsuit against Sony PlayStation states that owners of the console have been over charged. Alex Niell, the person heading the lawsuit says that the average person who buys things from the PlayStation store could be owed anywhere from $75 – $660 in damages. Niell claims PlayStation is charging about 30% over what the standard amount would be on games and DLCs through the game store. And, they’ve apparently been doing it since 2016.

The thing about the up charge that’s hard to dispute is that it’s a pretty common practice to do. It’s a luxury charge for being able to use their platform and shop. But when you’re forced to use something and already pay a membership fee to be able to use it, it gets a little muddy. It’s estimated that with the added charges for games and DLC through their store they’ve earned nearly $6 billion dollars. Sky News first reported on this and spoke with Niell about the charges.

“The game is up for Sony PlayStation,” Neill told Sky News. “With this legal action I am standing up for the millions of UK people who have been unwittingly overcharged. We believe Sony has abused its position and ripped off its customers. The actions of Sony is costing millions of people who can’t afford it, particularly when we’re in the midst of a cost of living crisis and the consumer purse is being squeezed like never before.”

Currently the lawsuit has 9 million claimants saying that they’re owed money from being overcharged. The lawsuit sum is about $5 billion British pounds which is nearly $6 billion in USD.
