Marvel Studios saved plenty of big announcements for its San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday. Both the studio’s president, Kevin Feige, and filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Sinners) announced one of the stars of Black Panther 3. David Jonsson (The Long Walk) has been cast as an adult version of T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) son. They also confirmed the much-anticipated film is shooting for a December 2028 release.
“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and privilege and the blessing to join,” said Jonsson during the panel.
Black Panther
The Black Panther franchise kicked off in 2018, starring Boseman alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett. It told the story of an advanced hidden kingdom called Wakanda. Heir T’Challa (Boseman) must step up to lead his people in battling an old challenger from the kingdom’s past.
It became the first superhero movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for best picture. And, of course, a sequel was quickly lined up. While Boseman was set to return, he unfortunately passed away in 2020 after a battle with colon cancer.
In 2022, the Oscar-winning Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit theaters and moved the story’s focus to Shuri (Wright). In this film, it’s revealed that T’Challa has a young son with Nakia (Nyong’o). An aged-up version of him is who Jonsson is playing. Given that he played a teen in The Long Walk, and there will only be 6 years between the films. We think it’s safe to assume there will be some kind of time jump here. Since plot details for the movie are still firmly under wraps.
Black Panther 3 will be shot on 70mm and is currently slated to hit theaters on December 15, 2028. We’ll keep you posted on updates as they become available.
