Brad Dourif Teases That Upcoming “Chucky” Movie Won’t Be What Fans Expect

In April, we reported that Chucky franchise staple Don Mancini is looking to write and direct a newer, darker installment. This weekend, Brad Dourif, who has played/voiced the titular character in every iteration (sans the 2019 remake), says Mancini is still hard at work. But he also teased that the upcoming entry will not be what fans are expecting.

    More Chucky

“If I know Don, I would say what he’s going to do is something completely different that I hadn’t thought of, that nobody had thought of,” said Dourif at the Creep I.E. Cinema panel hosted by Bloody Disgusting.

Dourif didn’t dish too much on plot details. Mostly because this early into development, he’s heard multiple, wildly different pitches.  “There is actually going to be another film made. I’ve heard maybe three pitches —that’s not a detail,” he says. “and I’m not saying what they are—but they’re all different.”

Normally, hearing so many wildly different ideas coming out of a production would be a red flag. However, Mancini and Dourif have been working together on Chucky since the first film in 1988. Over those 38 years, they have developed 8 feature-length films and created a 3-season TV series.

Despite the extremely campy TV series being the last entry into the franchise, the April interview promised a darker tone, akin to Curse of Chucky. So, it’s not like the franchise hasn’t been in this territory before.

Considering Dourif has retired from acting, with the exception of playing Chucky. “Nobody’s doing Chucky but me,” he proclaimed in June at Spooky Empire. It’s clear he has as unwavering a commitment to the franchise as anyone. And if it has gotten this far with wild fluctuations in tone and fans are still clamoring for more, clearly it’s working.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about the upcoming Chucky film as it develops.
