The phrase, “you can’t keep a good man down,” certainly applies to Jesus Christ. That guy was dead, buried in a cave, sealed behind a boulder, and he still got back up. The same can be said about the movie he was in that Mel Gibson directed. The Passion of the Christ originally hit theaters in February of 2004. It did extremely well for itself commercially. Critics were heavily divided on it for various reasons, but do you think that’s going to stop Jesus? Or Mel Gibson? Nope! Christ is coming back, baby! And he’s doing it in new and old ways!
Jesus, Part 2
Last year we reported that Gibson was preparing a sequel to The Passion of the Christ. That might sound kind of ridiculous, but it actually makes sense story-wise. If you’re familiar with biblical canon, then you know that the crucifixion was not the end of Christ’s time on Earth. After he died, he reportedly rose on the third day. After this, he spent 40 days walking the Earth before he ascended to heaven. There’s actually a story to be told there. Whether you’re religious or not, the concept of someone coming back to life and being given more time before leaving the world is pretty interesting.
Gibson is planning to cover that portion of Jesus’ life (afterlife?) in two films. Well, one film across two parts. The Resurrection of the Christ Part 1 & 2 will premiere on May 6th, 2027, and May 25th, 2028, respectively. In the meantime, if you want to catch up on Jesus’ antics, Gibson, Lionsgate, and Fathom Entertainment have you covered. From September 10th to September 17th, The Passion of the Christ is coming back to life in theaters. The film has received a 4K remaster with Dolby Atmos sound. That way, you can really hear and see Barabbas get spared instead of Jesus.
Jesus Christ, There’s More?!
As an added bonus, those who go to see it will get a sneak peek at The Resurrection of the Christ Part 1. You know, in case you want a spoiler for how the movie ends. Actually, we’re sorry. Come to think of it, we didn’t even put a spoiler review in here. So, like, as you may have figured out by now, The Passion of the Christ doesn’t end happily for Jesus. Maybe you’ve read the book, maybe you heard about it from other people. Either way, the ending of the movie is just like the novel. So when they speak of the resurrection in the title of the upcoming film, it’s kind of a spoiler unto itself. Hopefully they don’t put the sneak peek before The Passion of the Christ starts, though, otherwise the timeline’s going to get really messy.
We joke a bit, but this is going to do serious business. We’re guessing there’s going to be a pretty sizeable turnout for the re-release. Not to mention, given the religious audiences around the world, The Resurrection of the Christ Part 1 & 2 will do huge numbers at the box office. We’re pretty much willing to guarantee it.
