David Harbour and Gaby Hoffmann are venturing into new territory. The two have signed to star in Little One, a dark comedy currently in pre-production in Los Angeles.
Little One marks Alex Kavutskiy‘s feature directorial debut, reuniting Weapons producing partners Zach Cregger and Roy Lee. Character details are currently being kept under wraps.
Filming this month under a California tax credit for Little One, the film is about a sudden change in a child’s behavior that threatens to pull a perfect family apart. It is a concept that’s clearly in Cregger’s wheelhouse, though this one is clearly heavier on the comedy than the horror side, too.
Alex Lebovici‘s Hammerstone Studios is behind the project, marking a reunion with Cregger and Lee following the hit horror film Barbarian. Lebovici will serve as an executive producer alongside producers Chris McEwen (Love, Simon), and Amanda Phillips and Melina Torres of Soto Productions.
Kavutskiy works on the comedic series Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat and had previously directed the Sundance short Squirrel and the Adult Swim special Cool Dad. It is clearly in his comic territory, though the producers are a few degrees more seriously in the horror genre.
Little One is Cregger’s return to his roots
Little One is Cregger’s return to his roots as a writer and founding member of the well-known New York comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know. While his career has shifted more heavily into the horror genre, he was always also known for his comedic work.
Harbour comes in with good momentum. Recently starring opposite Jason Bateman and Linda Cardellini in the lauded HBO dark comedy series DTF St. Louis. He won a Gotham TV Award for his supporting performance. He also voiced a character in Sony’s animated film Goat, which crossed $194 million worldwide this spring.
Moving forward, Harbour has a packed slate including Violent Night 2 and Avengers: Doomsday (repricing his role as Red Guardian). It also includes Lionsgate’s John Rambo, Courteney Cox’s crime thriller Evil Genius, and the horror film A Head Full of Ghosts.
Hoffmann, known for her roles in Transparent and C’mon C’mon, recently appeared in the Netflix thriller series Eric opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. He will star in the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere opposite Jeremy Allen White.
Given this cast lock-up and the cameras rolling in a matter of weeks, Little One is going to become several of the most compelling genre-adjacent projects of the year.
