Aqua Officially Breaks Up After 30 Years

Aqua, the Danish-Norwegian Eurodance band who produced one of the 1990s’ most popular pop anthems, have announced their decision to split as a live act. The announcement came from members Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, and Søren Rasted on Instagram Monday, May 18.

“After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band.”

“When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past 30 years.”

In their statement, the trio wrote

No reason was given as to why they’re splitting. Just that It “feels like the right moment to say goodbye.”

Aqua was formed in Copenhagen in 1995 with four members, with Claus Norreen eventually leaving the unit in 2016. The trio gained worldwide fame with “Barbie Girl,” the third single from their 1997 debut album, Aquarium. A tongue-in-cheek, Eurodance anthem based on the lives of the fictional Barbie and Ken, it was a chart topper throughout Europe and made No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

They have become the best-selling Danish band ever, with an estimated 33.000.000 albums and singles sold worldwide.

The band’s buffoonish lyrics also drew enduring attention from Mattel, who sued the band in 2000, and claimed the band’s song had harmed their Barbie brand. The judge tossed the case in 2002 under the influential slogan “chill” and the band went on to work with Mattel themselves on a number of promotional campaigns.

The band released their second album Aquarius in 2000, and split for the first time shortly thereafter. They re-formed in 2007, and released their final studio album Megalomania in 2011, before, once again, dissolving, and re-forming with varying degrees of success.

    A Last Hurrah

Their last wave of mainstream pop culture acclaim came in 2023, when Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled “Barbie Girl” on “Barbie World,” a track recorded for the soundtrack to Greta Gerwig‘s billion-dollar smash hit BARBIE, which earned them a Grammy nomination and saw the original track trampoline into the UK Top 40 for the first time in 25 years.

Their final show was in November 2025 at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival in India. René will be performing a solo DJ set in Stockholm next month.

The band leaves behind an impressive legacy that extends far beyond a single song. However, “Barbie Girl” will almost certainly be what most people remember them by.
