A24’s live-action film version of Elden Ring has added a full cast and entered production. Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz are all onboard in addition to the previously confirmed names Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman.
Garland wrote and is also directing the project, set to start shooting in the UK this week. Rumors are that the films budget is at 100 million+, with about 100 days of principal photography remaining. It’s A24’s most expensive and high-profile feature yet.
It will be filmed in IMAX format to match the game’s expansive world and enormous enemies. A24 has announced it will be released theatrically on March 3, 2028.

Garland didn’t exactly waltz into this role. He wrote a hefty 160-page book-and-meme script, on spec, plus another 40 pages of images. He even flew to Japan to pitch it to Miyazaki himself, who ultimately gave Garland the green light.
In a June 2025 interview with IGN, Garland said he was on his seventh run through the game. And that his biggest boss was still Malenia, Blade of Miquella.
The Cast is Amazing
The cast itself is full of heavyweights, and he he harks to some clever callbacks. Sonoya Mizuno, a former Garland project, was in Ex Machina. Jonathan Pryce has The Two Popes and The Crown. Nick Offerman comes off of The Last of Us, and Jefferson Hall was in both House of the Dragon and Oppenheimer. Peter Serafinowicz is an awesome pick for FromSoftware veterans, as he voiced Pate in Dark Souls II.
Elden Ring, a fantasy story by George R. R. Martin and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. It takes place in the Lands Between, where the Elden Ring has been shattered, resulting in a war and chaos in the world. Character details for the film are still under wraps.
Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and has collected over 400 Game of the Year awards since its release in 2022. These high expectations will live on with this production all the way through March 2028.
