Anne Hathaway assures fans that Princess Diaries 3 is still a go. In recent news to Entertainment Weekly, the Oscar-winning actress gave a definite response about a long-anticipated Disney sequel, and the news is good.
“One hundred percent,” Hathaway said when asked if she’s back in Genovia, and she added that her team is “constantly working on” this third film. She shared the news while promoting her other big comeback, The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The reason for the pause is that the Devil Wears Prada sequel “cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,” so it’s “impossible to focus on both at the same time.” With Prada 2 slated to arrive in theaters May 1, the focus has shifted.
“The intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next,” she said, but she didn’t sugarcoat the announcement also being upfront that the project “is not greenlit or confirmed yet” by Disney.
Hathaway Confirms They’re Definitely Working on Princess Diaries 3
But Hathaway says they’re not twiddling their thumbs. Though there’s no studio go-ahead yet, she thought the project was in demand, and that she and her team are “chipping away at the script.”
Meryl Streep, who sat with Hathaway for the EW interview, agreed with the cautious approach. “You’ve got to wait for the right script,” she said.
Hathaway also discussed the pressure of working with characters people have grown to love, saying in a statement to the publication, “If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.”
There’s also a rumor from another angle. Meg Cabot, the author of the original Princess Diaries novels, told New York’s BookCon on April 19 that “there is a part for everybody,” meaning familiar faces will be returning. She gave Robert Schwartzman and Chris Pine as the names she was aware of returning, though Pine previously played Mia’s love interest Nicholas Devereaux in the 2004 sequel.
Hathaway officially confirmed the third film was in development in October 2024, with Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim attached to direct. She also confirmed she would be attached as a producer as part of her Somewhere Pictures production banner.
Very little else is known about Princess Diaries 3, including the plot and if Julie Andrews will reprise her role. But for a franchise that’s been in fans’ hearts for over 20 years, it’s not hard to get excited over any progress.
