Navigating the “New Normal”: 5 Signs Your Aging Parent is Ready for In-Home Support

Seeing your parents get old is an emotional process. Being adult children, we usually have to walk on a thin line between honoring their independence and their security. The new normal of aging is to realize that the parents who used to take care of us might now need someone to take care of themselves. Being able to identify the symptoms that indicate that an older parent is in need of help is the initial step towards providing them with the opportunity to live a decent, safe life at home.

These are five major signals to consider when considering home care in Marietta.

    1. Noticeable Decline in Personal Hygiene

A change in the personal appearance of a parent is one of the most direct and glaring indicators that he/she is struggling. Even when your parent used to be so careful regarding their grooming and nowadays looks untidy, it can be a sign of physical or cognitive challenges.

    • Reusing clothes over several days.
    • Bad breath or body odor, which indicates rarely washing oneself or cleaning teeth.
    • Disheveled hair or untrimmed fingernails.

Apart from the worry of falling in the bathtub or forgetfulness of the routine, the prime cause of these apprehensions is that the individual is not participating in personal hygiene.

    2. Difficulty Managing Daily Household Tasks

It takes a lot of physical and mental effort to keep a house. When you see that a normally clean house is getting dirty or you find that some of the basic chores are not being done, you have a red flag. The laundry pushed aside, dust on floors, or a fridge of expired food may be one indication that the daily requirements of life are piling up. The home care services in Marietta provide necessary support when the household tasks become too difficult to manage.

    • The room contains two distinct items, which include unopened letters and unpaid bills.
    • The pantry and refrigerator contain spoiled food.
    • Uncared-for yard or house.

    3. Forgetfulness and Mismanagement of Medications

Certain confusion about health management is hazardous, although mild memory loss is a normal aging process. Excessive drug intake or omission of doses may cause life-threatening conditions.

    • Disorientation regarding the time of the day or where he or she is at present.
    • Items such as keys or glasses are often left out of place.
    • Late doctor visits or social life.

In the case that your parent is unable to keep on top of his health regimen, you may engage professional caretakers to offer the attention required to control medications.

    4. Mobility Issues and Unexplained Bruising

The weakness of the body is also a significant danger to the elderly. The inability to stand up on their feet, to get out of a chair, and to support themselves with their walls are all indicators that mobility is impaired.

    • Bruises or bumps that cannot be explained may be a result of falls.
    • Loss of balance or difficulty in walking.
    • Difficulties moving or leaving the home or climbing the steps.

Among the elderly, falls have become among the most frequent causes of injuries; hence, early mobility limitation is vital to prevent significant disaster.

    5. Social Withdrawal and Mood Changes

    • Like physical disease, isolation is a health killer. A parent who was previously socially distant could be battling depression or an inability to negotiate the world without their assistance if they stop going to their job or seem to be indifferent.
    • Less curiosity in hobbies or leisure pursuits.
    • Rapid changes in temperament or agitation. interests or interests.
    • Sudden mood swings or irritability.
    • Loss of appetite to answer phone calls or to receive visitors.

It is not about depriving your parent of his/her freedom, but rather improving his/her lifestyle. The importation of additional care will enable them to age comfortably and safely. Through studying trustworthy home care in Marietta, families will be able to provide their loved ones with the sense of professional, compassionate help they need to be sure that they will cope with this new stage of life.
