We’re back with another edition of Urban Legend: Fact or Fiction. In this chapter, we’re going to dissect the rumor that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain faked his death to become Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo.
Those familiar with this series know we like to play along with the legend a little bit before dissecting it. But considering these are real people, one of whom has been dead for some time, that feels crass.
So we are just going to start by saying, no, this is complete fiction.

The Story
A recent inquest by a group of independent researchers alleges that Cobain’s April 5th, 1994, death was a homicide staged to look like suicide. This has already been a popular theory among fans, normally pinning the alleged murder on his wife, Courtney Love. But that’s a different tale for a different time.
This brought an old urban legend that Kurt Cobain faked his suicide to become Rivers Cuomo back into the limelight. This whole legend is based on a few flimsy bits of observation that we’re about to break down.
Appearance
Believers claim that Cobain and Cuomo have somewhat similar builds (…so do a lot of white dudes). Their facial features do differ, notably the shape of their noses, and their hair and eye colors aren’t the same. Cobain famously rocked long blond hair and blue eyes, whereas Cuomo normally sports short brown hair and has brown eyes. Both of those factors are reasonably explained away with contacts and hair dye. Just like a makeover is used to disregard the difference between the grunge and preppy fashions in the singers’ styles.
A nose job could have been performed to help cover up the identity change. However, given that Weezer released their first album a month after Cobain’s death, it’s unlikely anyone could heal that quickly.
Cuomo plays guitar with his right hand, while Cobain was a well-known lefty. A piece of information that is dismissed by theorists because Cobain, like many children at the time, was forced to use his right hand in school. Making him ambidextrous and fully capable of playing guitar with both hands.
All of this ignores that Cuomo was born on June 13, 1970, and Cobain’s birthday is February 20, 1967. Creating a 3-year age gap, we’ve heard of entertainers lying about their age before, but this seems excessive.
Not to mention, both bands played shows on the same nights with Weezer in California and Nirvana in Florida.
Albums and Writing Style
Nirvana and Weezer were both signed to DGE Records, a Geffen Records subsidiary. Nirvana was always known for a dirtier, hard rock sound, with Weezer creating music with more pop sensibilities. Some point to the drastic change as a sign of a cover-up; however, Cuomo is known for studying other bands’ music.
The frontman dissected songs from Green Day, The Beatles, Oasis, and (yes) Nirvana to create an “Encyclopedia of Pop.” He took what he learned from patterns in these bands’ music and applied it to his own writing. So any similarities or differences can be explained by the fact that he is well-versed in writing in various styles.
Rarely do celebrities address insane rumors, but this got so pervasive that producer Rick Rubin asked Cuomo about it on a 2021 podcast. After pointing out how ludicrous the idea was, he did part of the interview answering as Cobain.
Cuomo as Cobain
“I think it all came about because I changed my style of singing,” said Cuomo as Cobain. “When I was singing [with] the very thick rock voice, so many overtones and all this distortion naturally in my vocal cords. I was able to sing one melody four times in a row and call that a verse … and no one would get tired of my voice because it was so rich.”
“I think kind of running the opposite direction from grunge, you know, wear the button-down shirts and cut your hair short and sing with a very pure voice rather than a rock voice,” he adds.
“But once [I] starting singing with a very pure voice, like a choirboy voice that you hear on, say, ‘Buddy Holly’, I had to change my melody writing and my chord writing because the voice just wasn’t as rich. You gotta put the variation and the richness into the composition,” he explains. “So at that point, I started writing a lot more involved chord progressions and melodies.”
Cuomo goes on to sarcastically say that he didn’t ‘think anyone’s really ever come close to figuring it out because Weezer is so different from Nirvana.” Though he does tease one hint, his signature big-framed glasses. “I did wear them in the Nirvana video ‘In Bloom’, so it’s just like a little breadcrumb for people who are paying attention.”
The Results?
There you have it, Rivers Cuomo and the late Kurt Cobain are not the same person, and never will be. If Andy Kaufman couldn’t pull this off with his Tony Clifton alter ego, what chance do any of us have?
Death hoaxes like this highlight that if you go looking for something, you’re sure to find it. Every piece of solid evidence is dismissed by some wild, far-fetched theory, or by outright ignoring data. We understand some conspiracy theories may be fun, but keep in mind that these are both real people with loved ones that probably don’t appreciate this.
