Hideki Sato, the “Father of Sega Hardware” behind the Dreamcast, Mega Drive, and Master System consoles, has reportedly died at 75. For fans of gaming and especially the Sega, this news hits us right in the gut. It was Hideki Sato who created all of Sega’s home video game consoles. All of the hours playing on these machines can be attributed to Sato.

Originally reported by Japanese outlet Beep21 on X, they confirmed that on February 13, 2026, Hideki Sato had passed away. The post read, “Known as the Father of Sega Hardware, Mr. Hideki Sato passed away yesterday. He was truly a great figure who shaped Japanese gaming history and captivated Sega fans all around the world.”

Hideki Sato joined the company in 1971 and led the engineering teams for the SG-1000, Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Then in 2001 he became president following the passing of Isao Okawa and guided the company through its critical transition from a hardware manufacturer to a third-party software publisher. His exit from the position occurred just as Sega was finalizing a “life-saving” merger with pachinko manufacturer Sammy Corporation. He remained president until 2003 when he stepped down to the position of Chairman. He remained on until leaving the company altogether in 2008.
