7 Things that Tech-Savvy Travelers Must Consider Before Visiting China

For years, China has attracted travelers interested in discovering new cultures and places. With its rapid technological growth, China attracts tech enthusiasts eager to explore Beijing’s advanced tech landscape. However, if you’re new to East Asia and visiting China for the first time, there are a few essential tips you should keep in mind before entering the country.

Essential Tips for Tech-Savvy Travelers Visiting China

Let’s go over the essential points to consider before your trip:

    Carry Important Documents

First things first, you must carry all necessary documents safely. Indeed, your trip becomes worse when you leave any of your important papers at home. It could be troublesome for most travellers. It is advised to carry your ID card, passport, and visa documents with you. It is always a better idea to place them in an anti-left crossbody sling bag.

Get Ready to Deal with GFW

Most of you would probably be aware of China’s Great Firewall, which blocks most US and foreign apps and sites within China. So, you should get ready to deal with it in advance. In this regard, the first thing you do is get and activate an eSIM before entering China. Usually, e-Sims have built-in VPNs that let you bypass GFW restrictions. Withal, it is still a good idea to also download these free VPNs to avoid any situation. In this way, it becomes easy for expats to access YouTube, Google, and their Gmail accounts within China. For travelers facing connectivity issues, services like FleetProxy can provide China-based IP access, helping you reach sites or platforms smoothly even behind the Great Firewall.

Set Up a Mobile Payment Account

Another piece of great advice you must take in advance is to register on a Chinese payment platform. Yes, conventional online payment options don’t work in mainland China. Therefore, you must register on platforms like WeChat, Alipay, JD Pay, or UnionPay. Hereof, the most convenient option is WeChat. You just need to open an account there and provide your credit card details to pay within China through QR code scans. BTW, WeChat works like WhatsApp, but its payment feature is incredible.

    Download Translation Apps

Are you traveling to China without translation apps on your smartphone? If so, you may run into severe difficulties. While education in China is highly developed, most locals primarily communicate in Mandarin rather than foreign languages. The best idea is to download translation apps that work in China without a VPN and support Mandarin. Another tip is to learn some basic Chinese greetings and words before your trip.

Depend on Trains and Private Cars

China’s rail network is widely viewed as more efficient than air travel for short- and medium-distance travel. Rather than paying for costly plane tickets, trains offer a faster and more pleasant way to travel. Likewise, you can travel long distances by train, such as Xi’an to Shanghai or Chengdu to Lhasa. In this way, you can save 2–3 hours when choosing trains rather than planes.

On the other hand, if you want to explore every single detail of Chinese culture, old towns, and the Great Wall of China, you must hire private cars. Traveling in a private vehicle is very comfortable in China. It allows you to carry your luggage, visit off-the-beaten-path spots, and take your time at major sights.

Pack Wisely for a Hassle-Free Trip

Climate varies widely across China due to its immense territory. Hence, you must conduct an in-depth study of the weather in the Chinese regions you plan to visit. Once you understand the climate of the areas you’ll see, pack your clothing and accessories wisely, covering everything from activewear to footwear and hats. Withal, it is also a good decision to leave your power bank at home and buy a new one from China, as Chinese authorities only allow power banks with CE or FCC certification.

Keep Your Credit Cards and Cash with You

Keeping your credit cards with you is not enough. You must have some cash with you. China uses the yuan (CNY/RMB) as its currency. Make sure to have credit cards and some cash on hand for emergencies. However, it is a better idea to carry some cash from two different currencies. These currencies could be the New Taiwan Dollar and the Hong Kong Dollar.

    Final Words

All in all, whether you are planning to visit China or any other country in the world, you should prepare for your trip 2–3 months in advance. You must also have all the necessary knowledge of their internet access, firewalls, culture, and travel facilities.
