In the pantheon of American authors, there are very few, if any, that carry the kind of clout that Ernest Hemingway did and still does in death. Hemingway’s literary prowess was as grandiose as his personality; heavily drinking and guns blazing. His deterioration in his later years added a sense of tragedy to his life that helped cement him as a complicated and tragic figure, akin to a character he could’ve written about. Not only does his legacy continue from his works, but in his family. His great-granddaughter, Dree Hemingway seeks to shed some light on her ancestry in an upcoming film about her famous great grandad.

Dree Hemingway is an actress and model who entered into the world of film when she starred in the 2012 “Starlet” from future Oscar winner, Sean Baker. Moving from in front of, to behind the cameras, Dree will be serving as an executive producer for the upcoming film “The Hemingway Files.” Rather than being a standard biopic, the movie is set to cover the tumultuous final years of the author’s life. Hemingway was gradually succumbing to a kind of madness that was later theorized to possibly be a result of hereditary hemochromatosis. The syndrome causes excess iron to build up in the body, leading to physical and mental decline.

This wasn’t known at the time, making Hemingway’s deterioration all the more tragic and difficult for those around him. Dree Hemingway hopes that this upcoming film can help humanize Ernest in a way that is honest and empathetic. ” “My great grandfather’s story has been told many times but rarely with this level of empathy and honesty. ‘The Hemingway Files‘ is about understanding him not as an icon, but as a father, a friend, and a man trying to hold on to himself.”

Alongside Dree, much of the rest of the behind the camera staff has been set. Cory Todd Hughes and Adrian Speckert will write the script while Jessica M. Thompson is set to direct. Thompson’s most recent work was the 2022 horror title, “The Invitation.” In a statement regarding the upcoming Hemingway project, Thompson stated, “I want to peer underneath the mask of Hemingway’s legend and lay bare the truth of this multifaceted artist. I’m fascinated by the intersection of myth and reality. Hemingway’s story isn’t just about a writer grappling with obsolescence, it’s about the cost of masculinity, the fragility of family, and the truth that even the strongest among us can struggle.”

Currently no casting announcement have been made but we’re eager to see who winds up with the role of Ernest Hemingway. He has previously been portrayed by Corey Stoll in “Midnight in Paris” and Dominic West in genius, amongst other films. “The Hemingway Files” currently does not have a release date, but we’ll inform you when the sun rises on one.
