Artists having their work stolen to train AI is one of the biggest arguments against the emerging technology. And bigger companies are starting to fight back against this. Like Dreamworks putting a notice in the credits of “The Bad Guys 2” saying it couldn’t be used to train AI.
CODA, a Japanese content trade group that includes Studio Ghibli and Square Enix, has requested OpenAI to stop using its work to train Sora 2. Sora 2 launched on October 1st, and is considered OpenAI’s flagship video and audio generation model.

CODA’s Statement
“CODA has confirmed that a large portion of content produced by Sora 2 closely resembles Japanese content or images. CODA has determined that this is the result of using Japanese content as machine learning data. In cases, as with Sora 2, where specific copyrighted works are reproduced or similarly generated as outputs, CODA considers that the act of replication during the machine learning process may constitute copyright infringement,” the statement opens.
“Furthermore, according to media reports, it has been stated that Sora 2 responds through an opt-out system based on requests from copyright holders. However, under Japan’s copyright system, prior permission is generally required for the use of copyrighted works, and there is no system allowing one to avoid liability for infringement through subsequent objections,” CODA adds.
“1. In the operation of Sora 2, CODA requests that its members’ content is not used for machine learning without their permission; and,
2. OpenAI responds sincerely to claims and inquiries from CODA member companies regarding copyright infringement related to Sora 2’s outputs.”
Two requests that really shouldn’t have to be made, but once again, legislation is far behind new technology.
There has been no response by OpenAI about CODA’s statement at this time. We’ll keep you posted on updates about this situation as it develops.
