Student Housing Checklist: What You Really Need Before Moving

Moving into student housing is exciting—until you start packing. That’s when it hits you: you need more than clothes and a laptop. You need all the little things that turn an empty room into your home. Some students bring too much. Others forget the basics. This checklist helps you pack smart, so you arrive ready, not stressed.

    1. Start with the Basics: Documents and Essentials

Before anything else, sort your paperwork. Nothing’s worse than realizing your lease or ID is missing on move-in day.

    Here’s what to keep handy:

    • Lease agreement: Save a printed and digital copy.
    • ID proof: Bring your passport, student ID, and visa if you’re an international student.
    • Emergency contacts: Keep important numbers written down—not just on your phone.
    • Payment records: Rent receipts and deposit confirmations can save you from future confusion.

Pro tip: Keep all of these in one folder labeled “Housing Docs.” You’ll thank yourself later.

    2. Furniture and Comfort Setup

Most student apartments say they’re “furnished.” But that usually means a bed, desk, and chair—nothing cozy.

    Bring or buy:

    • Bedding: mattress protector, sheets, blanket, and pillows.
    • Extra seating: a comfy chair or bean bag for guests.
    • Lighting: a desk lamp or bedside light for late-night study sessions.
    • Storage bins: for books, clothes, and random stuff.

If you’re moving into a student apartment in Bloomington, ask for a furniture list ahead of time. It helps you plan instead of overpacking.

    3. Kitchen Gear for Daily Living

Even if you love takeout, you’ll end up cooking something eventually—probably noodles at 2 a.m.

    Make sure you have:

    • One pan and one pot.
    • A plate, bowl, mug, and a basic cutlery set.
    • Dish soap and a sponge.
    • A small container for snacks or dry food.

“Students underestimate how much cooking saves them,” says housing advisor Lila Grant. “It’s cheaper and more satisfying once you get the hang of it.”

    4. Study Setup: Build Your Focus Zone

Your study area should help you stay focused—not remind you that your back hurts.

    You’ll need:

    • A solid desk and a comfortable chair.
    • Good lighting and an extension cord.
    • Noise-canceling headphones.
    • A laptop stand or external monitor for longer hours.

In most student apartments in College station, you’ll get a desk and chair. But check them once you arrive—no one wants a wobbly table mid-semester.

    5. Bathroom and Cleaning Supplies

This part is easy to forget until you desperately need a towel or toilet paper.

    Bring:

    • Towels and toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, soap, etc.).
    • Toilet paper—bring a few rolls right away.
    • A caddy or bucket for bathroom supplies.
    • Cleaning wipes, disinfectant, and a broom or mop.
    • Trash bags and a small bin.

Unpack after you clean—it feels so much better to start fresh.

    6. Laundry Gear

Laundry might not be fun, but you’ll have to do it.

    Pack:

    • Laundry detergent.
    • A small basket or bag.
    • Dryer sheets or a clothesline for air drying.
    • A few hangers for shirts and jackets.

Check if your building’s machines take coins or use an app—many 2025 apartments now use cashless laundry systems.

    7. Connectivity and Tech Setup

    Wi-Fi isn’t optional—it’s the real lifeline.

    Make sure you have:

    • A router (if housing doesn’t include one).
    • Extra cables or power strips.
    • A surge protector for your laptop.

According to Student Living Insights (2025), 93% of students say good Wi-Fi is more important than rent price. Don’t overlook it.

    8. Safety and Comfort Add-Ons

Safety might not be exciting, but it’s worth your attention.

    You’ll want:

    • A flashlight or charged power bank.
    • Door and window locks checked on day one.
    • Renter’s insurance if possible.

Add some comfort touches too—rugs, curtains, or plants can make any small dorm feel warm and lived-in.

    9. Know What’s Shared vs. Private

Before moving, figure out what you’ll share and what’s yours alone.

    Ask your housing manager:

    • Which spaces are shared—kitchen, laundry, lounge?
    • Who cleans what?
    • Do you need your own cookware?

“Clear expectations make living with others so much easier,” says campus housing advisor Daniel Reed. “Respect shared spaces, and you’ll avoid most problems.”

    10. Move-In Day Plan

Move-in day always feels like chaos. A little prep turns it into a breeze.

    Here’s how:

    • Confirm your move-in time with management.
    • Label boxes by room or item type.
    • Pack one “essentials box” with clothes, snacks, and chargers.
    • Walk through the space before unpacking—note and report any damage right away.

Starting your semester in a clean, organized space sets the tone for everything that follows.

    Conclusion

Student housing brings a new chapter into your life. You will learn, grow and figure out things on your own. Focus on essentials like your documents, safety, comfort. It’s not just about finding student housing, it’s about finding your space.
