We have some fun news for all you “Eloise” fans out there. Netflix is developing a live-action film based on the beloved children’s books by Kay Thompson, illustrated by Hilary Knight. Amy Sherman-Palladino (“Marvelous Mrs. Maisel“) will direct and co-write, and Ryan Reynolds will produce and co-star.

The live-action “Eloise” film will star newcomer Mae Schenk as the titular character. Reynolds is described as playing an “original villainous character.” Principal photography for the project is set to start this month.

While plot details are currently under wraps, the project will be an original adventure based on the books. Sherman-Palladino is writing the script alongside Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. Reynolds will produce with George Dewey, Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau for Maximum Effort with Woolverton. Molly Milstein will serve as an executive producer for Maximum Effort.

    The “Eloise” Franchise

The “Eloise” books were written in the 1950s, about a girl who lives on the “tippy-top floor” of the Plaza Hotel in New York City with her nanny, dog named Weenies, and turtle named Skipperdee.

These books were previously adapted in 2003 as a pair of made-for-TV movies. “Eloise at the Plaza” and “Eloise at Christmastime” starred Sofia Vassilieva as the young girl and Julie Andrews as her nanny.

“Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza,” Hannah Minghella, head of feature animation and family film at Netflix, said. “It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm — Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds — in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film.”

There is no expected release window for the “Eloise” yet. We’ll keep you posted on updates about this project as it develops.
