Zach Cherry, Kali Reis Join Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil”

The long-running “Resident Evil” franchise will be getting a new theatrical reboot courtesy of director Zach Cregger (“Weapons”). Zach Cherry (“Severance”), Kali Reis (“True Detective”), and Johnno Wilson (“Twisted Metal”) have just joined the cast for the upcoming film. They will star alongside the already announced lead, Austin Abrams (“Wolfs”).

The script is co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten (“John Wick: Chapter 3 & 4”); however, it will break from the previous movies. Instead, it is meant as a love letter to the original Capcom game, which this entire franchise is based on. While plot details are still extremely vague at this point, we do know they will be using all-new characters. We’ve also been given the keywords: hapless courier, mysterious package, mutated creatures, corporate conspiracy.

It’s being reported that Cherry will fill the role of a scientist at a hospital. Reis is portraying someone ex-military in a part that was originally written for a male character. (And yes, we are salivating at the Ellen Ripley potential in that choice too.)

Between all of these breadcrumbs, you can Mad Libs together a plot, but probably shouldn’t get too attached to any stories until the project develops more. Shooting for the newest “Resident Evil” film isn’t set to begin until later this month in Prague.

“Resident Evil” currently has a projected release date of September 18th, 2026.
