What Is Eclipse Town? The Upcoming Game from Sebastian Sommer

Sebastian Sommer has never been interested in coloring inside the lines. For the filmmaker, each new project has been an excuse to reinvent the medium he’s working in. Now this includes video games. His latest endeavor, a project titled Eclipse Town, marks the boldest leap of his career so far: a move away from filmmaking into the space of interactive media.

Sommer grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where the collision of glossy urban surfaces and hidden corners would become a recurring motif in his work. After enrolling at NYU, he immersed himself in cinema, producing experimental short films that were shown at venues such as the Tribeca Film Festival and the Guggenheim Museum. Even at that early stage, his work displayed a fascination with atmosphere and structure, stories that unfolded more like dreams than scripts.

That sensibility carried through to his feature film debut, Dragon (2024), an otherworldly odyssey that blended mythology with contemporary visual technology. The film was Sommer’s break through, demonstrating his willingness to experiment with new tools, including AI generated imagery and non linear storytelling techniques.

It’s from that mindset that Eclipse Town has emerged. Sommer has described his shift to game development as a departure from film. Under the banner of his production company, Infinity Lens, he is now leading a small team in developing the project. While he has been characteristically secretive about its content, Sommer has been clear about his motivations: he sees video games as offering a broader, more flexible canvas for narrative experimentation, one where the architecture of a world can be as expressive as dialogue or plot. The move reflects a growing trend among independent filmmakers seeking new ways to engage audiences.
