Letting pets sleep in bed with you is a hotly debated issue, with 56% of owners letting them do it. Most common household animals like dogs and cats are born in litters, giving them the natural instinct to sleep close to family. So there is no denying that co-sleeping with pets is emotionally healthy, however, many argue it’s unsanitary. Not to mention the risk of having your companion turn into a complete bed hog or getting the zoomies.
Sleepy Hippo’s bedside pet beds offer a unique solution to this issue with a pet bed, next to your bed.

Bedside Pet Bed
These pet beds are solid furniture-grade wood frames with an 8″ orthopedic and memory foam mattress. All designed to sit flush with your human bed. It comes in three different height profiles, 20”, 25”, and 30” to suit most standard bed frames and mattresses. Giving your companion their own space to sprawl out while staying close by. As for the mess, there is a removable waterproof mattress protector so cleaning up is a breeze.
Sleepy Hippo was created when the founder’s beloved dog Beetle suffered a neurological injury that led to partial incontinence. They didn’t want Beetle to feel dejected or have a shift in their routine during such a traumatic time. But they were also worried about accidents during the night, making sharing the bed even harder.
And the bedside pet bed was born.

We were asked to test this product after my 18 year old cat, Runt, began to suffer neurological issues causing intermittent lameness in his left leg. He adapted to his new condition well, but developed a habit of sitting down a different way in the litter box. This led to the mess frequently getting caked on his paws and back legs. Since Runt is a very cuddly cat, this led to waking up several nights at 2 A.M. to find we had to wash the sheets because of the mess he made. So, we jumped at the chance to stay close at night without all the litter in the bed.
Our Sleepy Hippo Experience
We’ve put together a lot of flat pack furniture in the past few years and Sleep Hippo’s assembly instructions were pretty straight forward with well labeled parts. However, the quality is by far the best we’ve ever seen in a DIY assembly piece of furniture. The company says these are rated for up to 100 lbs, so a 7 lbs cat was no issue.

The only real complication was that our home has small bedrooms and because of its purpose, this pet bed takes up some space. Thankfully we were able to move it to Mr. Runt’s second favorite cuddle location/place to track litter, the sofa. The 20” low profile bed ended up sitting perfectly flush with our Boydhill couch. As you can see below, its his new favorite place.
