In 2022, the best-selling supernatural horror novel “Ghost Eaters” by Clay McLeod Chapman hit shelves. Now, Scott Derrickson (“The Black Phone”) is teaming up with his wife, Maggie Levin (“V/H/S/99”), for a feature film adaptation. Levin will write and direct this adaptation, with Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng producing for Crooked Highway.
Screen Gems is backing the project as part of a first-look deal with Derrickson’s Crooked Highway banner.

“Ghost Eaters” follows Erin as she struggles to cut off her charismatic but reckless college ex-boyfriend, Silas. Just days after Erin gets him out of rehab, he dies of an overdose in their hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Despite knowing how bad they were for each other, Erin’s world shatters over the loss.
That is, until a friend turns her on to Ghost, a new drug that allows people to see the dead. Distraught with grief, Erin agrees to a pill-popping “séance.” And, like most drugs, Ghost has horrific side effects, and once you take it, you can never go back.
Chapman’s novel was named one of Vulture‘s best horror novels of 2022, Paste’s best horror books of 2022, and Book Riot’s best horror novels of 2022.
This early into development, there is no release window for “Ghost Eaters.” We’ll keep you posted on updates about the film as they become available. You can pick up a copy of Chapman’s book here.
