“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Gets 5th (and Final) Season Renewal

In what some have recently described as the darkest timeline, it’s hard to imagine knowingly removing one of the few bright points. Sadly, it happens. While we may never know the reasoning behind the choice, we are torn to report our next bit of news. Paramount+ has decided to give “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” one more season, but, sadly, it will be their last.

As I say in situations like this, it’s always better for the creative team, the cast, the crew, to KNOW going in that the end is ahead. So many series don’t get that chance, and we the audience are the poorer for it.

But considering what a great show “SNW” is for Paramount+, what a strong addition to the Trek portfolio, it seems like a…frankly STRANGE choice. That said, reports are the final season of “SNW” will only be 6 episodes.

Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike on the series, had this to say about the news:

I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to sit in the chair. I received a phone call from Alex Kurtzman in 2018 and the rest is a beautiful, prismatic blur of hijinks and hairspray. But stick around. We’re going on many more adventures before we hang up our phasers. ❤️? pic.twitter.com/SzNX7auume

If you’ll recall, Paramount put itself on the market, looking for a buyer. Last we heard back in 2024, the Skydance merger looked it was happening, but there hasn’t been much movement there. Instead, just this week, Paramount issued a massive round of layoffs, effecting almost every arm of the company. The tally was roughly 3.5% of their US workforce, which doesn’t seem that high unless you were one of the employees affected.

“From the very beginning, ‘Strange New Worlds’ set out to honor what ‘Star Trek’ has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,” a statement issued by producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman reads. “And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”

Even with the end of the mission in site for “SNW,” it’s not all doom and gloom. We do have the upcoming “Starfleet Academy” series to look forward to. And by all accounts from those who’d know, it’s going to be something truly special.

The producers continued, saying they were “deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew.”

You can watch all of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” on Paramount+. Season 3 will premiere July 17th.
